Would you like to take lessons but aren't sure where to start when looking for a piano? No problem! Here are a few suggestions that I would recommend:
Dunkley Music
This would definitely be my top recommendation. Not only do they screen pianos for good quality, but they have a lot of great options, including grands, uprights, and digital pianos. They also offer both used and new pianos. One nice benefit is their fantastic upgrade program. In addition, their staff is very friendly and helpful, and going to Dunkley's is a very rewarding experience!
Craigslist
You might not instantly find a piano that is a great deal, but patience and consistency will often be rewarding! There are a few considerations to keep in mind if you decide you want to invest in a piano from Craigslist:
- What is the brand name? Some pianos are better than others. So be sure to do your homework on brands. Some great brands are Yamaha, Kawai, Steinway, Hamilton, Wurlitzer, and others.
- What is the Serial number? Even if it's a great brand, not all pianos from that company are best. So be sure to check.
- How old is it? Antique pianos are beautiful and have such a legacy! Unfortunately, however, after about 100 years, they start to wear out. Their strings start to break, they can lose the ability to be tuned, the hammers can be eaten by bugs if they haven't been played very often, the back might be coming off, and so many other things. So be cautious with pianos around 100 years old as they may cost more than the price listed.
- When was the last time it was tuned? Sometimes pianos that are not tuned in a long time can lose the ability to stay in tune, and will be a huge expense which won't end the way you wanted. So be sure to check when it was last tuned and if it was tuned consistently before then.
Do you think you might have found a piano but want a second opinion?
That's exciting! I would highly recommend to contact a piano technician or tuner - they often have great advice for you!
Also, if you would like a piano teacher's opinion, feel free to reach out. I love trying new pianos! However, do know that I am not a certified piano technician and my opinion is just that - a piano teacher's opinion. :)
